Welcome to a New Year and welcome to a New You! January is named after Janus, Roman God of gates and doorways. The first hour of the first day of the first month of the year was sacred to him. Janus was the God of beginnings and endings, openings and closings — hence the word janitor, which actually means a doorkeeper, not a cleaner. Janus was always portrayed as having two faces, one looking forward, one backward. January is his month because it is the time when the Sun starts to return and the days grow longer. It was not the New Year in Roman times; the year began in March, which incidentally is why September (seventh month), October, November, and December have the names they do — as I wrote about in previous newsletters.
As we turn our calendar pages to both a new month and to a new year, we also turn our thoughts to how to best reinvigorate our bodies, minds, and souls for this upcoming year. You’ve probably heard the sayings that “the sky’s the limit” and “carpe diem.” Carpe diem, or seize the day, is the expression used to encourage someone to make the most of the present time rather than always focusing on the future. While it’s important to live each moment and each day to the fullest, I want to prevail upon you to “carpe annum” throughout this first month of the year — to also seize the year! Yes, indeed, whatever you can conceive and believe in, you can achieve — words so often conveyed by contemporary and other great minds of history. So carve out time each week of this month to gaze up at the sky, see your goals as already achieved, and relish the feelings within you of joy and delight that you would experience if these goals were already your reality. In other words, assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.
No matter your age, if you can relax outdoors on the grass or another comfortable setting or environment, as you probably often did as a child, and gaze up at the sky as you focus on your personal, precious, and awe-inspiring goals, all the better. These are the first key steps to manifesting your dreams and wishes and creating your best life. You must see each goal first as already come to fruition in your mind’s eye and believe it in your heart. Then, you must also pay attention to your internal guidance system (follow your heart) that is always supporting you on your path to living the life of your highest dreams — a life filled with health, happiness, success, joy, prosperity, peace, and balance. Next, you must follow this guidance and take action. So many people wish, visualize, and hope for a brighter future without taking action. Finally, you must live with a grateful heart each and every day, as I write about in my new book The Joy Factor: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health. Put simply, give thanks that your goals and dreams have already come true because on the mental and spiritual level, they are yours. I always end my visualizations with this line: "This or something better I now accept in my life." I do this as an act of surrender knowing that the loving Source and Power within me knows what's best for me.

Rather, think of this support system as crucial to your overall health, as well as a source of laughter, sympathetic tears at times, and overall, joy.

Commercials for weight loss products and systems run most frequently around this time of the year since losing or keeping weight off is such a common January goal! But careful eating habits can keep extra pounds off for good, if only we pay attention.

20 Natural Remedies to Prevent & Heal Hangovers & Lessen the Desire to Drink
Commercials on television give you the impression that alcohol does nothing but make you happy, young, and attractive. The truth is much more sobering. Three Superfoods That Will Change Your Life: It will be easy for you to remember these three superfoods because they begin with the letters A, B, and C. More Reasons to Make Sure You Are Getting Enough Vitamin D
In previous newsletters, and also in my special package Renew Your Life, I discuss the importance to keeping your vitamin D at healthy levels in your body. It's needed for strong bones, a healthy heart, a lean, fit body, greater immunity, and cancer prevention, to name a few. This is a good time of year to check your level of vitamin D with a blood test at your doctor's office.
Now there are more reasons to make sure you are getting enough vitamin D. Both multiple sclerosis and mononucleosis are difficult diseases for people afflicted with them. A recent study shed insight into a risk factor: low amount of vitamin D. This study is consistent with other research that vitamin D blood levels are lower in winter when there is less sunshine and there are more colds and flu. Vitamin D helps your immune system stay in proper balance. One way you can protect yourself is to take a separate vitamin D supplement; I take at least 5,000 IUs daily. Plus taking it in winter may help reduce the risk of you getting colds and flu.
Twenty minutes of sunshine on your body (as much of your skin exposed to the sun as possible) will provide your body with between 10,000 and 20,000 units of vitamin D depending on your proximity to the equator and the time of year. Another study disclosed that almost 80% of Americans are low on vitamin D. I live in the sunny Santa Monica/ Brentwood areas of Los Angeles and spend lots of time outdoors exercising at the beach or hiking in the mountains. Much to my surprise, the last vitamin D test I got showed that I was severely low. So I immediately increased my supplementation of vitamin D-3.

New Year Smoothie to Detox & Rejuvenate Your Miraculous Body
Dried Plum & Apple Green Smoothie
The more common name for dried plum is prune, but I don't call them that because there are so many popular misconceptions associated with the word. This is a healthy and refreshing mid-morning or afternoon pick-me-up guaranteed to keep you in the flow this month and throughout the year and to help you detoxify and rejuvenate your miraculous body. Serves 1-2.
- 1 cup vanilla yogurt (dairy or nondairy if you are a vegan)
- 8 dried plums, pitted
- 4 leaves of romaine lettuce
- 1 kiwi, peeled
- 1/2 banana (fresh or frozen)
- 1/2 cup frozen apple-juice concentrate (you can also find it bottled and unfrozen)
- 1/2 tsp. (1,000 mg) L-Arginine *
- 1/4 lemon, peeled (leave pithy part on)
- 1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 3 leaves fresh mint
- 5-6 ice cubes
Blend until smooth and serve.

Natural Remedies of the Month
Fortify Your Body with Turmeric & Ginger
Ginger: Ginger is one of the most widely used herbal remedies on the planet, used worldwide by millions. And no wonder! It’s my favorite “go-to” natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness. When I fly, I take capsules hourly to prevent motion sickness. The results of one study involving 80 Naval cadets revealed that 1,000 mgs of ginger powder capsules controlled symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, vertigo, and cold sweats.
A compound in ginger called gingerol has a chemical structure somewhat similar to aspirin, which is a proven clot-busting drug. Dried ginger is also beneficial. I recommend half to one full teaspoon a day for 4 – 12 weeks for tackling arthritis and back pain caused by the degeneration of disks and vertebrae.
The latest research on ginger showed its pain-killing properties for osteoarthritis are on par with over-the-counter painkillers. Start the day with fresh ginger tea.

Fresh Ginger Tea:
Each morning, when I’m not traveling, I simmer a big kettle of purified water to which I have added 3-4 coins, (about ¼ inch thick), of fresh ginger root for about 10 minutes. I drink a large glass of hot ginger tea first thing in the morning and enjoy the several more glasses throughout the day. Sometimes, I put the ginger tea in a mug and add a tea bag of other health-boosting tea such as green tea, hibiscus, or rose hips.

Turmeric Root:
This salubrious root is best known as the aromatic ingredient that gives curry its vibrant, golden color. Medicinally, it’s recognized as a powerful antioxidant and is showing great promise in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. It’s one of the highest known sources of beta-carotene. In my private practice, I highly recommend turmeric to help reduce inflammation and to support healthy joint function. You will get effective relief from aching joints when you add turmeric to your diet. You can add this spicy powerhouse to your life either in convenient capsules, as a liquid extract, or as a powdered spice. I use all three in my health regimen. An antioxidant-rich spice, turmeric includes a compound called curcumin. Curcumin has been shown to protect the eyes from free radicals, which are one of the leading causes of cataracts. Other studies have found a curcumin supplement could ease the pain and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. In animal studies, turmeric has been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer by 58%.

Essential Eating Tips to Help You Shed Extra Pounds in 2012
If you follow my advice below, you will have a much easier time shedding any extra pounds and also maintaining your weight. This suggestion is two-fold: First, you want to eat your snacks and meals slowly. Hormones signal the brain when you’re full, but it takes about 20 minutes from when you start eating before you feel their signal. Slow eating not only aids in digestion, but also gives your brain a chance to know what the stomach is doing. If you make your meal last by talking, putting down your fork between bites, or just plain waiting, you’re less likely to eat on “automatic pilot” and more likely to realize you’re full. Besides eating slowly, chew your food thoroughly. You’ll be amazed how much willpower you can preserve when you take your time and give your “satiety center” an opportunity to tell you that you aren’t that hungry anymore.
On the flip side, you also want to finish your big meals within an hour of starting. The body produces a second hit of insulin if it senses a lot of food coming in continuously. You can avoid that second hit (and the subsequent fat storage that it triggers) by finishing a meal within an hour of starting. If you see something you like that you forgot to eat within the hour, that’s fine; just save it for tomorrow. It will still be there, and you won’t be wearing it on your hips.

Friendships Among Women Reduce Stress
As I wrote in my book The Joy Factor, friendships are very special in our lives. Never take your friendships for granted. A landmark UCLA study suggests that the friendships cultivated between women are indeed the most special because in addition to filling in the emotional gaps experienced in marriage, as well as helping us remember who we really are, and soothing our tumultuous inner worlds, they have now been found to also be powerful stress-busters.
This study suggests that women respond to stress with a cascade of brain chemicals that cause them to seek and maintain friendships with other women. Up until now, the past five decades of stress research has mostly been done on men so this is a stunning finding that has turned the scientific stress-studying world upside down. Explains Laura Cousino Klein, PhD, an Assistant Professor of Bio-Behavioral Health at Penn State University and one of the study’s authors, “Until this study was published, scientists generally believed that when people experience stress, they trigger a hormonal cascade that revs the body to either stand and fight or flee as fast as possible. It’s an ancient survival mechanism left over from the time we were chased across the planet by saber-toothed tigers."
What was disclosed in this study is that women have a larger behavioral repertoire than just the “flight or flight” response. “In fact," says Dr. Klein, “it seems that when the hormone oxytocin is released as part of the stress responses in a woman, it buffers the 'flight or flight' response and encourages her to tend to children and gather with other women instead. When she actually engages in this tending or befriending, studies suggest that more oxytocin is released, which further counters stress and produces a calming effect." "This calming response does not occur in men,” continues Dr. Klein, “because testosterone—which men produce in high levels when they’re under stress—seems to reduce the effects of oxytocin." "Estrogen,” she adds, “seems to enhance it.”
Two women scientists involved in this study (about how women respond to stress differently than men) had a classic “aha!” moment. “There was this joke that when the women who worked in the lab were stressed, they came in, cleaned the lab, had coffee, and bonded,” reveals Dr. Klein. “When the men were stressed, they holed up somewhere on their own. I commented one day to fellow researcher Shelley Taylor that nearly 90% of the stress research is on males. I showed her the data from my lab, and the two of us knew instantly that we were onto something."

I look forward with alacrity to the studies to be done in the near future on the ways that oxytocin encourages us to care for children and hang out with other women, but this enlightening “tend and befriend” notion developed by Drs. Klein and Taylor may explain why women consistently outlive men. Study after study has indicated that social ties reduce our risk of disease by lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol. “There’s no doubt,” says Dr. Klein, “that friends are helping us live." In one of the studies referenced by the doctors, researchers found that people who had no friends increased their risk of death over a six-month period. And in another study, those who had the most friends over a nine-year period cut their risk of death by more than 60%.

The famed Nurses’ Health Study from Harvard Medical School found that the more friends women had, the less likely they were to develop physical impairments as they aged, and the more likely they were to be leading joyful lives. What fascinated me immensely is that the researchers concluded the results were so significant that not having close friends or confidantes was as detrimental to your health as smoking or carry extra weight.
In an article about friendships among women which also touches on the results of the Nurses’ Health Study, Gale Berkowitz mentions the following: “When the researchers looked at how well the women functioned after the death of their spouse, they found that even in the face of this biggest stressor of all, those women who had a close friend or confidante were more likely to survive the experience without any new physical impairments or permanent loss of vitality. Those without friends were not always so fortunate."

Most of us women didn’t need this landmark UCLA study to tell us what we already know – our female friendships enrich our lives. It’s unfortunate that so many of us are simply so busy we forget to cultivate our female friendships. Perhaps in this new year, and new month of 2012, we will make a commitment to not relegating our friendship time to the bottom of our to-do lists and realize that we need our friends just as much as they need us. We must carve out the time to have unpressured space to nurture one another and to engage in the kinds of conversations that women excel at. Never forget that women are a source of strength to each other. Being with our female friends, even if it’s just a conversation shared over the telephone, is a very healing experience.
